FAQ'S

Do we need to hire a church consultant?

image155

There are many reasons that a church should engage an outside consultant.  The most common times are:

  • When a church has been on a growth pattern for some time but has plateaued (or declined) and the leaders want to take the church to the next level of growth.
  • When a church is facing a significant decision such as relocation, hiring staff, or building.
  • Whenever the church finds itself in a crisis. Crises generally involve people, property, programs, or finances.
  • Whenever the church is presented with what appears to be a good opportunity. Most opportunities bring risk and all opportunities, when acted upon, bring change.

However, there are also times when a church should not get a consultation:

  • If the senior pastor is opposed to it.
  • If a majority of the church leadership is opposed to it.

Can we afford NOT to pay for an outside consulting firm?

image156

When you are considering engaging an outside consulting firm cost often becomes a subject of debate in some churches for several reasons:

  • First, churches often do not like to spend money.  They are typically frugally minded, sometimes to a fault.
  • Secondly, hiring an outside consultant requires a change in how churches historically have approached challenges and opportunities. Some resist change and find comfort in established patterns, even if those patterns have not been the most effective in the past.
  • Unfortunately the church will often do itself a disservice by unfairly focusing on the cost of the service and not fairly counting the value gained from the engagement.

Consider the following parable:

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”  Jesus – Matthew 13:44 NASB

The man unearthed a treasure (unfulfilled potential) hidden in the field and then did what he had to do (sold all he had) to buy the field because he understood the value hidden in the field. He did not say to himself, “I would like to have that treasure, but I can’t afford it.” He evaluated the find, counted the cost, and understood the value was worth the sacrifice – which he then made.

Why do some consulting/coaching relationships fail?

The primary reason a consulting or coaching relationship fails is not because the recommendations are bad … it is because the church/organizational leadership is not willing to make the changes necessary for long-term transformation.

Additional reasons why some consultancy relationships fail:

  • Because some may not like or agree with the advice
  • Because some prefer things the way they are
  • Because change will make some uncomfortable
  • Because the church leaders are afraid of ruffling feathers

Why do some consulting/coaching relationships succeed?

Among the reasons why consulting and coaching relationships succeed in church and non profit organizations are the following:

Reasons why some consultancy relationships succeed:

Top level leaders, their executive staff and empowered leadership:

  • Understand the organization's current reality
  • Understand the need for change
  • Understand the cost of change – and the cost of not changing and
  • All are willing to pay the cost of change

What is the primary difference between a consultant and a coach?

image160

Using the example of riding a bike, the primary difference between faith-based coaching and faith-based consultancy is:

  • Coaching: A faith-based coach will help you understand how and why you ride a bicycle, help you to determine what's holding you back from riding properly, and jog along next to you as YOU ride.

Versus

  • Consultancy: A faith-based consultant will explain why one bike is superior to another, teach you how to ride the bicycle, and if necessary, ride the bike for you.
